When Mr. U and Mei found out they were expecting a baby, they could not have been more excited. They had been trying for a few years, and finally Mei was pregnant. Nobody in the world could have been happier. However, what the couple could not have expected were the side-effects of the hormonal changes through which Mei was going. Her skin started to become rough, her skin yellow in hue – yet nothing could prepare her for the hair loss. Mei’s once-beautiful hair fell away in her hands – Mr. U despaired to see it. Even though no physical change could lessen his love for Mei, he saw that with each strand of hair lost, a sliver of Mei’s love for herself was also lost. She began using hair extensions, which solved her problems – at least, for a short time. Every hair extension Mei used would become knotted from brushing, or grew dull and lifeless within just a few weeks. Each time, she ended up in the same, despairing position – and Mr. U could no longer stand to see his pregnant wife in this state. Mr. U went to his friend, an Indian man who ran a successful hairstyling business. Though he arrived in search of extensions, he noticed the young Indian girls waiting to be served had the most incredibly rich, delightfully long and straight hair. As his friend chopped off the hair of the young girls, Mr. U gathered the fallen hair – and as soon as he held it in his hands, he knew that he had found the solution to his wife’s needs. That night, when he returned home to Mei, he revealed the extensions he had made. And in that moment, he saw once more Mei enter the state of her younger, most vibrant and confident self. His beautiful wife, in the moment, had never felt more beautiful.
